Amazon Mission Trip

Dios te bendiga! That is “God bless you” in Spanish—one of the national languages of Peru. It is exciting to tell you the news that Chris Duncan and I (Joshua Kaufmann) are teaming up to go on a mission trip to the Peruvian Amazon this summer to work with ministries I worked with three summers ago.  Chris and I will to be in Peru from May 26th to July 26th, 2012.

We will be doing outreach in the city of Nauta, located at the headwaters of the Amazon River. Nauta is about a 2 hours trip from Iquitos, Peru where we will be flying into. In fact, Iquitos is the largest city in the world that you can only get to by boat or plane (there are no highways through the Amazon Jungle).

Ministry opportunities while we are there…

During the trip, we will be working alongside my friend, Pastor William and Crystal Reitsma doing evangelism to people in Nauta (and possibly other villages along the River as the opportunities arise) who need to hear of salvation through Jesus and also assist in other areas of needed outreach. Some of these ministry opportunities will include children’s outreach, teaching ESL, sports ministry, helping short-term mission teams, and helping to build/start a mission discipleship training center for the region. We also hope and pray that, God willing, we this trip can foster a relationship between our Church and Pastor Williams church and ministry in the region so that together we can bring more souls to know the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Spanish Bibles are a rare and expensive in the Amazon, so we are planning on bringing as many as we can to distribute through local churches and ministries. Other items that are needed include resources for Children’s ministry such as Spanish Christian children’s books and DVDs, clothes, school supplies, and other minister supplies. I have received permission from a company that makes and sells magic illusions with a Gospel message to translate some of their pamphlets into Spanish to use for teaching and ministry. I pray that we will be able to have at least one of the pamphlets translated for the summer. Chris and I would like to ask for your prayer support not only for us during this trip, but also for the people we minister with and to. Pray that we are open to the guiding of the Holy Spirit and that His truth and Gospel will be proclaimed so that souls may be saved. We are planning on raising at least $4,000 to cover the ministry materials (Bibles, children’s ministry resources, etc.), travel and lodging expenses while we are there. If you would like to receive a support letter and prayer card to keep on your fridge or whereever you’d like in order to remember to pray for us during the trip, please contact me with your name and address!
